Our mission is simple: to protect horses and help owners who can no longer care for their animals find a humane and loving alternative to cruel death or abandonment. Our immediate focus is on pressuring Congress to pass legislation that closes the slaughter houses for good.

If history is any guide, some Derby bluebloods will end up one day far away from the bright lights, in the cold, cruel surroundings of a slaughterhouse.

Barbaro’s Jockey Reflects

 

The New York Times - April 30, 2008 

The Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado accomplished his greatest racing feat, winning the Kentucky Derby with the undefeated colt Barbaro by six and a half lengths in 2006. Two weeks later, he was dealt a devastating blow when Barbaro shattered his right hind leg at the start of the Preakness Stakes, ending the pair’s quest for the Triple Crown. Because of Prado’s quick thinking, Barbaro was given a chance to live. Sadly, after a brave battle, Barbaro was euthanized on Jan. 29, 2007. In Prado’s recently released book, “My Guy Barbaro,” he tells the story of his teammate and his friend.
